Olive Barb (Seniputhi Mas-চেনীপুঠি)
The Olive Barb (Systomus sarana), also known as the Sarana Barb, is a captivating freshwater fish native to South and Southeast Asia. This species is characterized by its elongated, compressed body and olive-green coloration, which fades to a silvery hue on the sides and belly. Typically growing to about 15-20 cm, they exhibit a metallic sheen that adds to their visual appeal. Olive Barbs are schooling fish, thriving in groups within clear, slow-moving waters abundant with vegetation. They are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of foods, including algae, plant matter, and small invertebrates. Known for their peaceful nature, these active swimmers are well-suited for community aquariums of at least 200 liters. Providing plenty of swimming space and hiding spots with rocks and driftwood enhances their habitat. During breeding, they scatter eggs among aquatic plants, requiring slightly warmer water for successful reproduction. The Olive Barb’s hardiness and dynamic behavior make it a popular choice among aquarium enthusiasts.
